This no BS job search advice from the Archives (2014) is a simulakast of radio
In this show, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter talks about some things that you should do to seek a job, while you are already working.
Note: I don’t recruit anymore. I am a coach that helps people to be more effective in their careers. This can be accompanied by job discovery, can be more effectively working, management and leading, can be more successful in the development of your career and career, and many more. Whatever job was mentioned in the show was filled years ago. I have no idea that any advertisers mentioned are still in business.
Good morning, this is Jeff Altman, big sports hunter. It is Eastern at 9 am on Monday and turns into a good, healthy dose of without BS job search advice. This is a time where I like to spend about 15 minutes to speak with you about some elements of job discovery, because for me, the job hunting is hard, hard, painful or even until it is for many of you.
So many people do so that if they can work, it is enough to find a job and is hired for that job, when in fact, there is a full range of additional skills that complements the capacity that really needs that most job hunters never cultivate and go a very long way to find the work. So, this is where this show comes. Now, most of the time, I spend talking to my shows who are out of work or who are looking for work aggressively. But sometimes, you are thinking about changing jobs, or you are very happy what you are doing. But if you are thinking about improving your circumstances.
So what can you do? What kind of things can you do in search of such a job, as a person who is currently working and considering another option? Now, the first thing is to be clear about what you are looking at the way of a new situation. Now, for me, this is very important. After all, if you were driving, I don’t know, from Miami to Boston, and your car did not have a road map or GPS, how would you know that you were on the right road? How would you know that you were really in the way of Boston, if you had some versions of maps or GPS to help you? Now, you can be able to say to yourself, well, I understand it as I go with.
Do you want to conduct your job search, understanding that you walk with you, and at least make a goal for yourself? Now, a lot of recruitments or shocks in my mind suggest that you should think about a dream job. I do not believe that such a thing is such as a dream job. I think what you should start doing is to make such parameters that give you an idea of what your goal is.
And then you can adjust as you walk together, seeing what interests and what you are not interested. But start having such parameters for which you want to start watching. And then from there, there are two things you need to do.
Number one starts its resume and updates the cover letter. And number two, update your LinkedIn profile. Before you update your LinkedIn profile, I want to remind you, you may be connected to your boss or manager or some colleague you do not want to warn that you are considering something else.
Before you update your LinkedIn profile or twist it, turn off the privacy setting that alerts all your connections with the fact that you have updated your profile. And then after the profile is updated, then what you do, you turn off that function. And thus, in the future, you can inform people of changes.
So, for now, close that feature and, at the same time, update your start again. I use the term cover letter. This is really wrong.
Think in the context of a normal email that you can send that you will attach your resume that you can use as a baseline for every other cover email that you can send out. Therefore, by doing so, you will start a basic resuxury that you can make up because I do not believe that you have ever sent a generic resume for jobs. And even when you are contacted by recruitors, even if you are contacting by corporations based on your linkeden profile, you never send that generic resume.
What you do is always tailor for the role they have described to you. So, in this way, you can perform as much as possible that you are fit for that situation. For generic resumes, if you are posting it on the job board, go so far to pay for any facility that will hide your name from the recipient.
In this way, they are going to resume some normal in which your name and contact information is not known. It may be an encrypted email address. I know that the monster does this.
I think most firms, most major job boards do so. Therefore, in this way, many employers use these job boards to search for candidates in themselves. Do you want them to resume you? I don’t think so.
If necessary, go so far to pay for that service. Keep paying for this. Do not make it cheaper on it.
The result suggests that you are hiding your identity from your current employer, but you can start your organizations again. Another thing that I think is really important, do not use your office computer or office phone to search for a job. Now, if you are using a computer, I would simply say, never use one at work because there are words and domains that set employers as a trigger so that people can find out. , , Tell the management that someone is looking for a job.
Therefore, for example, in some organizations my domains can be blocked from communication or an alert to tell them that someone is communicating with me. If you are using an office phone, remember that the smartphone belongs to your employer. Use an individual smartphone for all your communications.
Do not come through an office server where the same problem may occur. So, next, think about taking some time. Take one day.
I do not care if it is a weekend or a working day. Start thinking about something that starts your process and networking in the person. See, for me, in the context of generating informative interviews, it is important to reach those you know and do not know, buy some coffee, choose their brain and start asking for some advice, especially in informative interviews.
Talk with them that you are considering making changes. You are looking for some input about how your area is developing and wants them to meet them for coffee or for a quick lunch and can choose your brain about things that you can do to prepare yourself for the next step of your kind and where they can encourage you to improve your skills because you are thinking about making a change and you are looking for a change. What do you miss in your background that intervenes, can interfere with moving forward in your career? Therefore, take some personal time to do so.
These days many interviews are being done by the phone, at least beginners. So, you want to think when the call comes, do you want it to come to your desk phone or do you want it to come to your mobile? Do mobile, do mobile. When it comes to your mobile, you need to practice being accidental when the call comes.
Therefore, you can simply say to a collar, you can share space with others, or they can reach you at the time of meeting. You want to make sure that you are not interacting at an inappropriate location or time or when you interact, you want to be particularly stressed. Therefore, just practice answering by saying, this is not a great time for me.
If we set time later later, will you consider bad? So, then, in this way, you can get ready and can be out of that normal place and not only get out in a conference room or when a call comes, takes the lift out. Long ago there was not a situation where a person resumed me. They were in the process of getting into lift red loss connections.
Why? There was no signal to allow the conversation to continue really in the lift. He serves better by saying this, Jeff, would you consider bad if I gave you a call in about five to ten minutes? I just want to go to a place where I can speak independently. And then reaching the place where he knew that there was a good cell signal and then I was calling me back from there.
Finally, and again, it is already about the reminder that you may be connected with people through social media you do not want to trigger or alert to the fact that you are changing the job. One thing is not to talk online about your job discovery. Remember, your colleague you think of as your bud can also be someone who is dying for your job or who wants to swallow himself for both his managers, telling them that you are looking for a job.
Therefore, do not talk about social media and talk through social media how your search is going on. When everyone is said and done, it is important to change jobs from time to time. After all, the way the system is established, if you live long in an organization, the tendency to the organization is to bring you to bring people, not to further your compensation. , , Not more than a couple of small percentage marks to increase their compensation. , , For those roles to bring people from outside what you want because they have already done.
You are looking for a job in your career and looking for a job, while you have one.
