Watch: Socal firefighters save Eli’s life, a colic mule

Orange county firefighters came to the rescue when a 20 -year -old mule named ELI appeared for the count.

The Orange County Fire Authority captured the video of the Trabuco Canyon operation last week. Eli lived deadly colic, said the agency on X. Station 18 intervened when the owners of the mule could not stand him up.

Images have shown that the horizontal equins were tortillating themselves and struggling as a firefighter and a veterinarian helped him. A team of firefighters then attached Eli, overthrew him and hoisted her with a rescue system called BiPod.

According to Sean Doran, OCFA spokesperson, this equipment was used during the Second World War to ride on tanks upside down.

“He has this incredible capacity and strength,” he told Times. “These horses obviously, or the mules in this case, are not up to par.”

The firefighters came out Eli from his stable before carrying it on his feet. After a little, he goes back to his stable, where he is much better, said the X post of authority.

According to the University of MinnesotaHorses and other equines are naturally subject to colic. Allowing the animal to walk can help relieve pain, the university said. Doran said that Eli, lying down, was unable to switch from food and was at risk that his organs will compress. If he had not been hoisted straight, the colic could have been fatal, he said.

Doran said he watched the rescue occurring on Friday and revised Eli on Sunday. He spoke with one of the owners, an animal lover who had owned Eli for almost all the life of the mule. Everything in the rescue was “just a goodness, a pure kindness,” he said.

He also said that OCFA firefighters had been trained to make large animal rescues with horses. In addition to routine rescue skills, they learn to approach horses and interpret how they should be treated according to the situation.

“It’s a transparent teamwork in action,” he said.
