Voters sorting or excuses for citizenship?

In the democratic structure of the country, elections are not only a means of gaining power, but a sacred opportunity to express the public authority. This is the reason that the importance of every vote is extraordinary. But when the election process began to be questioned, when the citizenship of the citizens started getting suspicious in the name of the voter list, when the Supreme Court’s instructions were neglected by the electoral institutions, it was a matter of shaking the foundation of democracy.

In 2019, Home Minister Amit Shah clearly announced that the first Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be brought, after which the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented at the nationwide level. His statement was a regular strategy. In this context, in recent months in Bihar, the voter list of extraordinary reviews has started. Prior to the July 28 hearing in the Supreme Court, the process of filling the extraordinary movements and forms of the Commission creates a serious concern.

The Election Commission claimed that 80 % of forms have been filled so far and the final voter list will be prepared by 30 September. This question is important when the Supreme Court has not yet given a final decision and has raised important questions on the intention and capacity of the Election Commission during its hearing on 10 July, what is it known? The court has demanded an explanation of three basic points, that is, the commission has adopted the amendment of the voter list, to what extent can this option be used and to what extent should this process be completed? Prior to the answer to these important questions, the use of words like Bangladesh, Nepali and Rohingya by booth level officials fall under the category of violation of clear human rights, the launch of their listing. In Bihar alone, 3 million voters are expected to be expelled, one million migrant workers. The workers who are the backbone of the economy of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore have been made suspicious in their state today.

All these activities are going on in Bihar, but similar measures are being prepared in West Bengal. The main election office of the state has started appointing booth level officers, being trained, and is likely to be released by the mid -use of the voter list (SIR). Although the notification has not yet been revealed, the voice of the Commission in Delhi shows that the decision has already been taken.

Remember that the last head in West Bengal was two decades ago in 2002. Now it is being implemented at a time when the BJP government at the Center wants to strengthen its political presence in Bengal. On the Commission’s documentary, the ruling party of Bengal, Trinumool Congress, has raised strong objections and demanded that no voter should be registered or expelled by 2024.

Political analysts believe that a long plan is being implemented through this process, the first voter list amendment ‘then census’ will then pave the way as ‘foreign infiltration’ for minorities, tribes and backward classes. Although this entire practice is wrapped in technical, constitutional and judicial screen, its political implications are undisputed. Is this entire process actually part of the ‘science of science’, the science of emission, where the game of political interests is being played under the guise of citizenship?

The next hearing of the Supreme Court is expected to be held on 28 July. Millions of voters, especially those who do not have land, education or high level documents are looking at the Supreme Court. This decision will be not only their citizenship but also their identity, existence and democratic voting.

In a democratic country, if the trust of the people in the neutrality of the electoral process is dissatisfied, then the power of the vote not only goes on, the entire constitutional balance deteriorates. Therefore, an organization like the Election Commission is expected to decide in favor of people rather than political masters, maintaining its neutrality and constitutional integrity. Otherwise, history will not only determine citizenship, but will also remember the days of apathy and fate in which voters were made homeless on their land.
