The long -standing friendship between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is shaking when the White House has launched a fast economic attack in Delhi. It is not a traditional warning or criticism declaration, but a 25 % tariff stone that was thrown into the American trade pond and the largest hidden in India.
Under the new tariff system implemented from August 7, 25 % of India’s exports will be implemented in the United States. Indian steel and aluminum already had 50 % tariffs and 25 % on cars and parts. Now all other products have also been added to it. They include drugs, machinery, cloth, agricultural objects, everything. This is India whose large part of export depends on the US markets. In this case, such mass tax is directly economic decline, export cold and industrial unemployment. Interestingly, all this is happening at a time when there is a trade agreement in both countries from $ 20 billion to $ 20 billion. But five conversations so far cannot come to a meaningful conclusion. The United States is under pressure that India should open the doors of its agriculture and dairy markets for American companies, while the economy of Indian farmers considers this discount as a poison killer. The Modi government is not clearly responding to this, but the background of American weapons and energy imports has become a sign of softening before pressure.
Additional fines for the purchase of oil and weapons from Russia are actually a recent example of Trump’s geo -economic blackmail. India, which is the largest marine buyer of Russian crude oil, is now being fined, although the final amount of fine is still unclear. According to sources in the Ministry of Commerce, Indian oil refineries have already begun to reduce the purchase of Russian oil and are now preparing to turn to the United States in defense, nuclear and fossil fuel areas. Although China has up to 30 %tariffs, the rate on the rest of the countries is much lower than India. Vietnam has 20 %, Indonesia and Philippines 19 %, Japan, European Union and Pakistan have only 15 % and 10 % in the UK. This unilateral step of the United States has created extraordinary concern in global trade. Central banks from all over the world are preparing to deal with inflation and India has become the most affected country in this category. The question here is that even if a reliable friend like Modi cannot get American concession, what is the basis of friendship?
Modi’s silence in this case is no longer a political strategy, but an agreement on national dignity. For the last three months, Modi did not respond to the intervention with sensitive military measures such as Tram’s intense rhetoric, mediation with Pakistan and operation sender. His constant silence and smile is actually a wreath of a political compulsion under which weak economic theory, weak foreign policy and capitalist inclination are hidden. On this occasion, the Ministry of Commerce should show insight instead of aggression. A wave of economic reforms that excluded the country from the crisis in 1991, today a new version is required. Non -Tariff Obstacles should be a balanced MSM and the status of global trade should be installed with a new strategy.
The fact is that India’s trade relations with the United States are no longer based on Marwat or friendship, but are based on direct interest. If India is giving the United States a profitable opportunity on its soil, it should also expect dignity. If friendship is needed, recognition of respect.
