Washington-President Donald Trump signed a decree prohibiting “third-party, Pay-Pour-Play” payments to university athletes on Thursday, a move that the White House takes to limit the “call for tenders” that have disrupted university sports in recent years.
The order, a Information sheet that was shared in advance with NBC News by a White House official, notes that recent judicial decisions have dismantled the rules for the transfer and recruitment of the NCAA and “created a chaotic environment that threatens the financial and structural viability of university athletics”.
The order could send shock waves via university football and male basketball, where players recruitment in the so-called transfer portal has become a several million dollars market in recent years, the best teams spending tens of millions to fill lists.
The prescription would not apply to compensation from the fair market for athletes who make mentions of the brand, according to the White House.
The order also seeks to protect female sports and not returned by demanding that the sharing of income between universities and university athletes be implemented in a way that protects these programs.
The President’s order also notes that a patchwork of laws in 30 states has contributed to competitive imbalances in sports.
It was not immediately clear how the proposed order would be applied, nor what mechanisms were in place to ensure that income is shared more equitably between sports for men and women and non -generators of income.
