Trump Revenue: India stopped planning to buy arms from United States

According to three Indian officials familiar with the case, New Delhi stopped its plan to buy new weapons and aircraft from the United States.

On 6 August, Trump imposed an additional 25 % tax on Indian products as New Delhi is a Russian oil buyer. He said that India was thus supporting Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

After the tariff hike, the total tax increased by 50 %on Indian exports, the highest compared to any American trading partner.

On the other hand, this is India’s first concrete sign that it is unhappy with President Donald Trump’s taxes on Indian exports, which has brought relations between the two countries to the lowest level in decades.

Two officials said that India had planned to send its Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to Washington in the coming weeks to announce some purchases, but the journey was canceled.

The US President holds a record of taking U -turn soon in terms of taxes. India says it is actively engaged in conversation with Washington.

One of the Indian officials said that defense purchases could move forward when India received clarification about tariffs and bilateral relations, but ‘not as soon as possible.

Another official said that written instructions were not issued to stop the purchase of arms from the United States, which shows that Delhi has a way to withdraw the decision immediately, even though ‘at least no progress is being minimized.

The Indian Ministry of Defense and the Pentagon did not answer the questions of Reuters.
