The “worst case of famine is currently taking place in the Gaza Strip,” the main international international authority on food crises in a new alert said on Tuesday, predicting “generalized death” without immediate action.
The alert, still short of a formal declaration of famine, follows an outcry in images of children emaciated in Gaza and reports of dozens of deaths linked to hunger after almost 22 months of war.
THE international pressure Israel led over the weekend to announce measures, including daily humanitarian breaks in fighting in certain parts of Gaza and Airdrops. The United Nations and the Palestinians on the ground say that little has changed, and desperate crowds continue to overwhelm and unload delivery trucks before they can reach their destinations.

The integrated classification of the food security phase, or IPC, said that Gaza has changed on the brink of famine for two years, but that recent developments have “considerably aggravated” the situation, including “increasingly strict blockages” by Israel.
“Increasing evidence shows that famine, malnutrition and widespread diseases lead to an increase in death -related deaths. The latest data indicate that the famine thresholds have been affected for food consumption in most of the Gaza strip and for acute malnutrition in the city of Gaza,” said CIP. “Immediate measures must be taken to end hostilities and allow a humanitarian response without hindrance and on a large scale.
An official declaration of famine, which is rare, requires the type of data that the lack of access to Gaza and the current mobility has largely denied. The IPC only declared famine a few times – in Somalia in 2011, in South Sudan in 2017 and 2020, and in some parts of the West Darfur region of Sudan last year.
“Deadly turning” reached
But independent experts say they don’t need an official declaration to find out what they see in Gaza.
“Just as a family doctor can often diagnose a patient whom she knows according to the visible symptoms without having to send samples to the laboratory and wait for the results, we can also interpret the symptoms of Gaza. This is famine,” said Alex de Waal, author of “Mass statue: The History and Future of Famine” and executive director of the World Peace Foundation, said the Associated Press.
An area is classified as in famine when the following three conditions are confirmed:
At least 20% of households have an extreme lack of food or are mainly hungry. At least 30% of children aged six to 5 suffer from acute malnutrition or waste, which means that they are too thin for their size. And at least two or four children under the age of 5 per 10,000 are dying daily due to famine or the interaction of malnutrition and disease.
The report is based on the information available until July 25 and says that the crisis has reached “an alarming and deadly turning point”. He indicates that the data indicates that the famine thresholds have been affected for food consumption in most Gaza – at its lowest level since the start of the war – and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City. The report indicates that nearly 17 out of 100 children under the age of 5 in Gaza City are very malnourished.

Israel has restricted aid to various degrees throughout the war. In March, he cut the entrance to all goods, including fuel, food and medication, to put Hamas with free hostages.
