A crew member of Royal Caribbean stabbed another member of the crew on a cruise ship, then died after jumping over on Thursday evening, the authorities announced.
The incident occurred near the Bahamas off the island of San Salvador on the icon of the cruise ship on sea, according to the Police force of the Bahamas Royals. Around 7:30 p.m. local time, a 35-year-old South African man has stabbed a 28-year-old South African woman several times, police announced.
The man fled the scene and jumped into the water. He was then found unanswered and declared dead by medical staff on board, police said. The woman suffered stab wounds in the upper body and was allegedly in a stable state, police said.
“Our crew immediately launched a research and rescue operation, but unfortunately, the crew member died,” said CBS News on Friday. “We express our condolences to the family and relatives of the crew member. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.”
Passengers on board shared videos with CBS News Miami who showed that crew members arose to help after hearing “Oscar Oscar Oscar” on the intercom, who is the secret man over the code.
The ship slowed down and turned quickly after this call was turned off, according to passengers.
Royal Caribbean did not identify the crew members involved or provided a possible pattern in the stabs.
The incident remains under investigation, police said, and an autopsy has been planned.
