A search is underway for the award -winning journalist Alec Luhn, who disappeared on a Norwegian glacier during a solo trip on a hike on Thursday.

Luhn’s wife told CBS News that he had left for a hike on July 31 in Odda, in southwest Norway, and shared his location.

She said that her family was not worried because he is an experienced outdoor man. They expected that he did not have a cellular service, but when he did not show up for his return flight to the United Kingdom on Monday evening, his wife and family called the police.

His wife, Veronika Silchenko, said that he had sent a photo of his last known location to Odda, “and it was the last time I heard from him.”

Rescue operations have been underway, but have been hampered by bad weather.

His family wants to pass the word in the hope that anyone hiking on the same route will share all the information with the local authorities.

“Alec is fundamentally obsessed with the Arctic. He loves glaciers and snow, and he likes explorers, and he is a climate journalist, so for him, it is always this story that now because of climate change, they shrink, and he does his best to go to the coldest countries,” said Silchenko.

Luhn is based in London, but was born in Wisconsin. He reported points of sale, notably the Atlantic, the National Geographic, the New York Times, Scientific American, Time, CBS News Radio and Vice News TV.
