A police officer was killed after the authorities said that an active shooter opened fire near the siege of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Atlanta campus of Emory University on Friday afternoon.
A dekalb county police officer, who has not yet identified officials, was transferred to a local hospital after the shooting, where he was in critical condition and then declared dead, officials announced at a press conference on Friday evening.
Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, CEO of the county of Dekalb, said it was a “dark day” for the county.
The Atlanta police department said the suspect at the shooting was found dead of a ball injury, which was perhaps self-inflicted. No civilian has been shot in the incident, police said.
Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum said at a previous press conference that the suspect had fired several laps from the CDC building, breaking Windows.

There were 92 children in a daycare center on the CDC campus at the time, unharmed, added the police.
The shots were reported at 4:50 p.m.
DEKALB County police officers located the suspect on the second floor of EMORY Point’s CVS pharmacy in front of the CDC building and tried to hire the person when shots were exchanged, police said.
Four other people were transported to a hospital in the region for stress and anxiety, said the police chief.
Shortly after the shooting, a shelter on site was set up on the campus of Emory University and was then lifted. “Run. Hide. Fight. Avoid the region,” the university said in an alert on Friday afternoon.

The Governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, published a declaration on X thanking the first stakeholders to rush “towards the danger to master the shooter and save lives”.
“We ask you to join us to hold them in our prayers, as well as those who are injured this evening near the CDC Center,” wrote Kemp.
The FBI Atlanta and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident.

The attorney general of Georgia, Chris Carr, published a statement on Friday, saying: “We are horrified by the news of Emory University and praying for the security of the whole campus community.”
The White House was watching the situation, said an official at ABC News.
