Mercedes Engineer Haile Thomas faced “fully new challenges” by developing new power units for the 2026 regulations. Thomas said in a recent interview that new units face major energy problems in different parts of the tracks, and this has been something that has made it difficult to deal with engineers.

“At the beginning of the long straight, the system should have full strength. In other parts of one lap, you will have to recover more and more. It should usually be handled by brakes. However, if you compare the length of the brake steps with full throttle parts, it is not enough.”
“So the battery is not only charged when the driver brakes. Instead, the fuel is converted into electric energy: we have to bring something. The engine has to be broken and corner -fuling full engine into a full load mode, which we have to feed in a battery.
