“ Like dogs ”: the video seems to show migrants detained in a federal building in New York

The new video obtained by ABC News claims to show the conditions in a so-called “retention installation” for migrants held in a federal building in New York.

The videos were shared by an inmate with a local civic group, who then provided them to the Meeting of the New York State assembly, Catalina Cruz. The New York Immigration Coalition widely shared this video in a press release on Tuesday.

The Cruz assembly told ABC News that the man who shared the video, one of his constituents, had recently been detained during an immigration hearing in New York and was detained at the establishment on the 10th floor of the 26 Federal Plaza on Place Foley in Manhattan. The videos were blurred and the voice of man’s shooting was published by the civic group to protect the identity of man.

The video seems to show more than a dozen people inside a room, with several of them lying on the ground on thermal blankets and seated on benches. The person who filmed the video also showed two toilets separated from the rest of the men by only a waist wall.

“Look at how they have us, the situation in which we are … like dogs here,” said the man who films the video in Spanish at some point.

In a press release, New York Immigration Coalition said that videos seem to show that installation is used as a detention center rather than a simple detention center, and should, as such, be monitored by the congress.

Last month, members of the Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman Congress said they had tried to access the area inside the federal building where migrants were held, but were refused access by the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS).

“The question is, why can’t we enter? What do they hide?” Goldman asked journalists at the time. “It is unacceptable. It is unacceptable that they have denied our access, and we will continue to put pressure for access with the leaders of the Ministry of Internal Security, because they violate the law.”

But the DHS continued to claim that migrants are “briefly treated” there before being transferred elsewhere.

“26 Federal Plaza is not a detention center. This is a treatment center where illegal foreigners are briefly treated to be transferred to an ice detention center,” said DHS assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, in a statement in response to videos published on Tuesday.

“Any assertion that there is overcrowding or subprime conditions in ICE facilities are categorically false. All prisoners receive appropriate meals, medical treatments and have opportunities to communicate with family members and lawyers. Immigrant defenders have warned that people detained in the establishment benefit from a minimum food and are placed in unsanitary conditions.

The Cruz Assembly said that it had found that the videos were “extremely angry” and said it was not surprised that the DHS previously prevented the legislators from visiting the region.
