The Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., plans to withdraw the 16 members of a very influential advisory committee which offers advice on preventive health services, such as cancer screening, HIV prevention drugs or osteoporosis tests, depending on two people familiar with the plan.
The United States preventive services working group is a group of independent public health doctors, nurses and experts to regularly examine volumes of the latest scientific research on disease, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and mental health, as well as breast cancer mammography.
Health and Human Services spokesperson Andrew Nixon said on Friday in an email press release that “no final decision was made on how the USPSTF can better support HHS’s mandate to make America in good health.”
Earlier this month, Kennedy caused an alarm among the members of the working group after suddenly reproducing a planned meeting which was to focus on heart disease and prevention. At the time, the members of the working group had no reason for the cancellation or if the meeting would be postponed.
Kennedy’s plans have been reported for the first time by The Wall Street Journal.
The working group plays an important role in protecting access to screening and tests because the affordable care law, more commonly known as Obamacare, obliges that most private insurers provide the services that the group recommends to patients at no cost.
The working group makes its recommendations using a rating scale. Under the federal law, services that obtain a note A or B but must be covered by insurance plans for patients.
