Jim Lavel, astronaut, who was the commander of the sick Apollo 13 mission-“Houston we have a problem”-who has turned into one of the most dramatic in the history of space flight, died at the age of 97.

All three astronauts announced that they were ready to make another moon flight, but never given an opportunity.
Born on 25 March 1928 in 2.10 AM Cleveland, Ohio, he built and launched model rockets, took a science degree and wrote a paper on liquid-fumed rockets. Later worked as a Navy Test Pilot before becoming an astronaut with NASA. He was described as a popular, easy personality, who was never suffering from the illness after flying, suffering from some of his fellow astronauts. He flew on four space flights: Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13.
