I want to be technical and do administrative work. What can I do that will not keep me technical and management?
What is success?
I am Jeff Altman, big sports hunter. I coach people and organizations. I do career coaching, leadership coaching. , , You know, I work with people to succeed in my job discoveries, infection in their new roles and are very successful.
Someone wrote me and asked this question and it is more wide than the introduction. So, I give it to you. “Where does an IT person go, it is to continue improving his salary or total compensation package in the 50s?” As he writes, “This seems to be an unwritten rule that your codes are very old or very expensive to write code in the 50s and 60s and thus, they need to go into management or, perhaps,, perhaps, became a road warrior to write a strategic architecture design status or code as a rented gun.”
This person would not like to work as a hundred percent road warrior like Big Four Consulting firms and thus, what they like to do, they say, it is better not to be in the abstract world of design and strategy because he is quite solid and likes to deal with concrete problems and resolve them individually and it is better to be in management because he does not like administrative goods. So, he is wondering what he can do.
Now, we do not know what this person does in particular for life, besides they work in it. Ah! I think they are a data architect!
Now. I do not know what their compensation is, but I know that firms hire data architects! He hired data professionals and you do not necessarily have to be in management to give compensation very well. Now, again, we do not know how much this person is currently earning, but looking at his picture because I am staring at him and LinkedIn, he presents himself as a 50 -looking youth. , , Until it is an old picture.
And my first response is in the geographical area of all, there are large organizations that are ready to pay more for talent and thus, large outfits have principals like roles or other unique titles for organizations that are for high technical individuals who are not necessarily involved with people or resources management.
Now the second option is to think in the context of consultation, but the way this person is thinking about it, he is not. They are thinking about the role of a road warrior where they talk about a hundred percent journey. Firms I know, who do this kind of work. , , This is more 80%. , , But this is fine. He does not want to travel .. But there are many organizations that work with firms that they can consider to work and allow themselves to infection in a super tech role.
Now, the issue with it is, although they will not join the management, they can still speak to be very technical. After all, a point comes that, until they can find what they are going to do. This is also true in the industry. =, But it is representative for consultation. Therefore, I want to accept it. In the industry, in big businesses, when it comes to a recession, we guess who is taking people? All these big remote Ms claim stability?
So there is no guarantee about anything, but if you went into consultation in the local market and talked about not doing a road warrior with firms, the contrary to going to big national or international firms and talked with them, and, instead of talking with those firms, he spoke with a local firms about working in his market area. Within a proper proximity for this, you have a shot.
But I also want to keep in mind that you claim to be a very expensive person and, the more senior you are, the more that the way you are going to receive money is to go out of the firm and become an independent advisor and to work privately. But it is going to include marketing and sales, promoting yourself or working through some contract agency.
So there is no simple answer. There is no easy solution and all of them have downside for them. Therefore, I am not portraying a picture of flowers and roses, beautiful music. These are going about difficult options that you want to make and whatever you choose is fine, but find out some different options.
