3 things to do when your dream work becomes a bad dream
it is Jeff Altman, Big game hunterAnd today’s video is actually about stability and looking for a stable job. And I want to start you by relaying a story. Now, I have been a professional recruitment for more than 40 years. And I remember that I am quite junior, such as my second, third year search, and candidates are saying such things, “Hi, I have found this great company that wants to meet you”.
Um, and I will describe the environment in which the person will work. I was only working at that point, but this is not the point of the story. So I described the technical environment, how smart the hiring managers were, a full bunch of goods that I was taught. And then I will continue saying this, “and it is a bank, and if the banks start lying down, it is time for all of us to leave the country”. Well, banks have closed. I have not left the country, maybe you have, but-.
And by the way, the bank’s name was the manufacturer Hanover Trust, a name that has long disappeared from the banking circle in the United States. They were acquired by another name which has long disappeared, Chemical Bank. So, you know, in hunting for stability, I want to indicate that now there is no such thing as stability in corporations. Things always change. Eventually, stories about Fortune 500 at the time of Great Depression include a company, which was manufactured buggie whip, and RCA, and other firms along with antique technologies are legendary.
There is no stability. What you can do keep your head up instead of your head. Look at the trends in your area, see how you can capitalize beyond or further than the curve. So that in this way, you are attractive to other firms. Because the reality is that if you are in your firm for the next 10 years, it is an unexpected set of events. You are statistically a hurdle. and why is that? Because clearly, for an employer, you are disposable.
I wish it would be different, but behavior tells me that people who promise to you often go long as long as the promises need to be kept. Does promotional opportunities and salary increase? Minor. You go from drone level one to drone level two, who cares in all ways to Drone Four? What is important your personal marketing ability. If you are able to live with the technique of your time, if you are ready to live with time trends, and do not prey to your employer’s laziness or financial inertia, who tries to convince you that it is working that no one cares in the market normally, then you are going to learn a day, where you are going to learn the opposite.
So I am going to tell you that you stop looking for stability within your organization or out of the next firm. The only stability you can create, as millions of people have learned in the final recession, are with your skills, knowledge and network. Get it again: Your skill, knowledge and network.
