In the quarter-finals, Italy killed the United States in three sets, winning 25-22, 25-21 and 28-26. Meanwhile, Poland had more difficulty in China, the match going to five sets. After losing two of the first three sets, Poland stormed, winning 25-19 for the same thing, and finally taking the final set 15-12.

Italy was the leader of the preliminary round, winning its 12 games. Poland won nine of its 12 games in the preliminary round.

This is the seventh female tournament of the FIVB volleyball nations league, but a change in format this year has eliminated the relegation stage, the tournament extending to 18 teams this year. The United States has dominated at the start of the existence of the tournament, winning the first three events, but Italy has since intensified, winning two of the last three nations leagues.
