As someone spent his freshman year at Alabama University (UA), I know how expensive it can be to participate in two semesters already. Add the experience of Greek life, and your social circle is not the only thing that suddenly spreads.
Socority hashtags and content have exploded on social media, becoming a reality TV show for the rest of us, as much as a real recruitment process. This was especially true for the UA, which is often used as a benchmark for recruitment across the country due to its size and money.
Earlier this year, Max (East HBO Max) issued a documentary that examines the UA rush through a magnifying glass. Whether you have seen the documentary, enthusiastically followed the #Bamarush trend, or you are just eager about the price paid for the Greek life, let’s talk about the correct costs of soreness recruitment.
I will break the crowd process, indicate its main financial factors, and weigh professionals and opposition to take on Greek life.
Why go to Greek?
The purpose of Greek life in the campus is sufficient: these organizations bring together people with equal ideology and allow them to find new opportunities, give back to their community and bind on shared commitments and responsibilities. Many people find that the Greek system helps them to create an identity in a large complex and at the same time, make deep relations with those who are in the same path of life.
What is?
Also known as “recruitment”, running is the journey that starts to meet with potential new members (or PNM) and is admitted by agony in the hope that they will eventually be chosen by one to join. During the rush, all the participating sorrites in the PNM campus meet, essentially, is interviewed for how well they fit with the organization. The word “Rushing” comes from the assumption that sorrites are running to show themselves the best in the campus and attract the best members.
Recruitment usually occurs in decline and spring for many universities, with a decline congestion every year, mainly because it is the beginning of the academic year.
Some schools host recruitment a few weeks before starting class, while others hold it immediately after the introduction of classes. Either way, the specific crowd cycle occurs for some time between August and October each year.
Rush was happening last week at Alabama University.
Recruitment round
During Rush Week, you will experience many themed rounds because you know each sorritity and vice versa. Rounds are often short in the beginning of the week and last long, as sorrites narrow their lists of PNM and invite them to their sister for a more intimate look. Similarly, the number of houses of a PNM decreases each day, as you also rank each agony after interacting with them.
How can your week be here:
- Day 1, convocation ceremony: PNM meets and learn about each agony in the campus. Note that at the end of each round, the agony on its top candidates vote.
- Day 2, Philanthropy: PNM learn about volunteers of each chapter and community participation. This subject can sometimes extend to more than one night.
- Day 3, Sisterhood: PNM is better aware of the members of the chapter through one-per-one conversations. These conversations are closely viewed by other chapters.
- Day 4, preference night: PNM meets one of their favorite homes. This night is often the longest and most severe phase, in which a chapter makes the final evaluation of the properties, interest level and compatibility of a PNM.
- Day 5, Boli Day: This is the last day of recruitment. You will know what agony you match on the day!
Interest properties during recruitment
We all know what you bring for each trip, based on this, sorrites are assessing you. But what does that really mean? What is the most important for them? As you read through this list, keep in mind that it is equally important that you assess how each chapter fits with your own interests.
Here are some sample questions that you want to be ready to answer:
- where are you from?
- Why did you choose this school?
- Why are you interested in Greek life?
- What is your chief
- What activities were you involved in during high school?
- What activities are you planning to join the campus?
- What do you expect to get out of being involved in an agony?
When you answer these questions, think about how your answers express your personal qualities. Some of the top properties have sorrites:
- Commitment to school, your grade and college entrance exams revealed by score
- Commitment to your community, which can be displayed by previous volunteer experience
- Leading
- Positivity is clear from the tone of your conversation
- Interest in joining this, has been indicated by the previous extra curricular and future plans that they should be engaged in the campus.
Some people also pay Sorritity Rush Consultants to help navigate this process.

Here is the breakdown of each region, you should be ready to spend money in the first year of your life:
Clothes
If you have decided to undergo recruitment, I hope you are ready to “incite the gods”. Sorritity Ootd (day’s outfit) video received a lot of traction on #rushtok during the fall period, highlighting the length to stand out some PNM to stand out.
Popular fabric brands worn by PNM during recruitment come at a price. And trust me, you will feel the pressure to wear brand similar to your peers. Preferred objects include altar state tops (about $ 35 to $ 80 either); Center Scott Jewelery ($ 40 to $ 200); Lily Pulitzer floral-print fabric ($ 100 to $ 300); And Steve Maden Shoes ($ 50 to $ 350).
Remember the Rush themes I mentioned?
This is where they start hitting your bank account, as you are also expected to play part and cure a themed outfit for each night of recruitment. The combined cost of crowd clothing for the week can be approximately $ 450, assuming that you borrow some items from friends and make new shopping on the cheap side.
Member payable
All members pay each semester, although these fees differ by the chapters you choose.
If you choose to stay in the chapter’s house, you should expect a room and board with chapter fee on an annual basis. One -time new member fees pledge, initiation, and increase the first year cost to achieve your sorreity pin.
The average new member outstanding in the UA for the 2025–2026 academic year is $ 4,750 per semester. Note that some chapters have scholarships or grants for members based on financial requirement or educational qualification, although they are usually available only to existing members.
Want to break the costs? Look at the financial budget below for one of the top-rated sorritity in the UA.
Accommodation
Even if you live in the Chapter House or Off Campus, the housing cost will add sufficient amount to your first year college expenses.
Note that staying in a chapter house can probably be more expensive than sharing a dorm or house with roommates elsewhere. However, staying in in-house provides an additional benefit of having or near the premises, which creates adequate social opportunities. And, perhaps most importantly, it uses you almost full day for freshly prepared food thanks to the private chef of your chapter.
Nevertheless, $ 8,400 average in each semester for staying in the house during the 2025–2026 academic year of the UA. Compare that with the cost of staying out of the house, which is an average of $ 4,100 in each semester. Do you not stay at home, you usually need to pay for the chapter’s food plan.
miscellaneous
Do not forget that only once, to register for recruitment, once, there is an unbreakable fee. In the UA, this fee is $ 375, and this includes the cost of recruitment publications, the use of the features of the campus, transport around the premises and some recruitment T-shirts.
Adding all the above expenses result in a dangerous result. In all, you are looking about an average new member cost $ 4,750 each semesterOr $ 9,500 for your first year – and it is not including living in Sorritity House!
After your first year, it increases the total if you decide to stay in the chapter house and if you continue to stay outside it then it decreases slightly. Do not forget, they are at the top of the cost of participating in your university.
To hurry, or not to escape: this is the question
You are looking at your first year approximately $ 4,750 each semester, or an average new member cost of $ 9,500.
Many students move towards adequate opportunities providing Greek life. But it is important to consider carefully what you want from this possible chapter in your life and if its affiliated expenses are worth its benefits.
If your heart is set on running, then I recommend making a budget at least before your expenses can be consciously planned. After all, while Greek life can be a good investment in itself, it does not require to go into a significant loan.
If your agony is more than the cost of your school’s presence, you cannot use federal or institutional financial support to cover the difference. Therefore, if necessary, the research scholarship that may be available to you based on your educational profile. And arrive to see if Sorritity offers its internal scholarship or gradual payment plans. Also, consider other methods, you may be able to save money elsewhere as a student, such as dividing the costs of streaming services, cut your cell phone bill, and buy items used instead of new.
Remember: Going through recruitment does not promise you a bid in the end. So really take time to think about whether you are ready to invest in your money, so that you can move forward in something.
