Hello, this is Jeff Altman, big sports hunter. And welcome to no BS job search advice radio. For thousands of years, men and women have gathered outside the fire of Hudson around the fire.
And they have resumed questions, functional or chronological? Which one should I use? Well, today, I want to answer the misery of mankind and answer this question once and for all, should it be a functional resume or be chronological. So, with it, let’s roll. Let’s talk about functional resumes. I am not a fan of functional resumes.
Did I mention that I am not a fan of functional resumes? There is a problem with functional resumes here. They suggest that you are hiding something. They are suggesting that relevant experience that you are applying for this role is old.
They are suggesting that you are re -starting or hiding a large gap in your employment history. And thus, even if you have relevant experience, I am not going to call you. Best of all, I am going to send you an email that says, please start me a chronological.
Why so? Because time is precious and you are clearly trying to hide something. You are clearly trying to hide the interval so that the information is old. Why will you send a functional resume? Because you did this work last week? no way.
But the fact is that people use functional resumes regardless. You know, only the time of the starting of a functional resume makes sense if you are changing career and you are moving with training that you have which is relevant to your new role. Then I can see functional resumes working.
But beyond this, whatever you are doing, it is obscuring something that we have to know anyway. And if you feel that the employers are different in any way, then you are joking yourself. They are not.
If anything, they will stop and ask. They are just going to hit the delete. You know, I can’t tell you. , , Well, let me tell you.
I recently joined the CFO search. And I get a lot of functional resumes for this discovery. I respond back to those who display the relevant experience, semi-revolistic resumes.
Every time, the experience has been the year old and irrelevant to my customer because the most recent you are doing is the most relevant what it matters to them. And if you have been away from the CFO function for many years because you are running a business and now it is going out and now you have to go back to a CFO role, then you know, they are not going to bring you on board. So, I just just say, start the functional again.
You are not joking to anyone. Whatever you are doing, it is wasting its time and other people’s time. And, you know, just don’t bother.
