Erik Menendez seeks to be released from prison as he receives treatment for a serious illness before his parole hearing next month, his lawyer said this week.
Lawyer Mark Geragos refused to share the details of the 54 -year state in an interview with TMZ. But familiar sources with the treatment of Erik told Times that he suffered from serious kidney stones and complications resulting from the state and needs in -depth medical treatment.
Geragos did not immediately respond to a text message asking Times comments on Tuesday.
Geragos told TMZ that he would ask Governor Gavin Newsom to release Erik immediately before the brothers’ appearance before the Conditional Liberations Commission.
“It is a serious illness and he needs, I think, to be absent so that he can focus on the hearing,” Geragos told TMZ, adding that he thinks that it would be released early would be “the appropriate thing to do.”
Erik Menendez and his brother, Lyle, spent more than 35 years in prison to kill their parents in 1989 in a case which, in the past year, drew public attention after the publication of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez” of Netflix “and various documentaries.
The brothers had a chance of freedom in May when a county judge of Los Angeles gave a request to have them.
The decision of the Superior Court judge, Michael Jesic, to condemn the brothers to life for life, came after hours of testimony of family members who said that the brothers had spent enough time behind bars for the brutal killings of their parents. The brothers had served living conditions without the possibility of parole.
If the conditional liberation committee recommends release the brothers in August, the decision will be sent to Newsom for examination.
