A 19th victim of the Eaton fire was found in Altadena on Monday, officials said, bringing the total number of deaths to 31 more than six months after unprecedented forest fires swept away large expanses from Los Angeles.
The remains were found on Bloc 10 of the short Venezia and determined as human, the office of the medical examiner said in a press release Tuesday.
Like all the victims of Eaton’s fire except one, this person died west of North Lake Avenue, who served as a line of demarcation Between those who received evacuation alerts before the arrival of the flames and those who did not do so.
Eaton’s palisades and fires were among the most deadly and destructive fires in the history of California. In addition to the dozens of lost lives, more than 16,000 structures burnedthe majority of which were houses.
The victim was not yet identified. A single other victim, discovered in mid-January in the Pacific palisades, has not yet been identified.
Before Monday’s announcement, the last discovery of remains took place in April, representing the 18th victim of the Eaton fire and the 30th in the general classification.
Investigators are counting on dental files, DNA, medical records and x -rays to identify the remains, according to the press release. They question families of missing people to search for clues.
“Due to the complexity of these methods and the process, it can take a long time to confirm the identity of a deceased in these types of cases,” said the medical doctor’s office.
