Boulder, colo. – Colorado coach Deion Sanders revealed on Monday that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, but after surgery, his oncologist considered him healed.
Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urological oncology at the CUC Center Center / Uchealth University of Colorado Hospital, said Sanders had his bladder withdrawn as part of the surgical plan.
Sanders plans to supervise the buffaloes this season as he enters his third season in Colorado.
Sanders, who will be 58 years old next month, spoke to the media on the eve of the fall camp. He brought his medical team with him to discuss his diagnosis.
The charismatic coach returned to campus last week and announced on social networks: “Back and feel good!” He missed football camps in Boulder this summer in the information that he was sick.
On Sunday, the production team of “Well Off Media”, which tells Sanders and the Buffaloes, published a video on YouTube from the coach’s first meeting with the team. In the middle of the clip, there was a scene, dated May 9, where Sanders said: “I do not know if I am mentally ready, emotionally. Last night was difficult, yesterday was difficult, because I had to do a will. It is not at all easy, to think that you may not be there.”
Sanders dealt with problems surrounding his left foot since two toes amputated in 2021 due to blood clotting problems when he trained to Jackson State. He missed the media day in 2023, his inaugural year in Colorado, after a procedure to eliminate a blood clot from his right leg and another to straighten the toes on his left foot.
In March, Sanders signed a contract extension throughout the 2029 season.
The Buffaloes launched the season on August 29 against Georgia Tech in Folsom Field. It will be the first season for some time that he has not trained one of his sons. The quarter-Arrière SheDer Sanders was drafted by the Browns of Cleveland while Shilo, security, is on camp with the Buccaneers of Tampa Bay.
Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes went 4-8 in his first season and 9-4 last season, with an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. They have large shoes to fill out to replace Shedeur Sanders and the winner of the Heisman Travis Hunter trophy.
