The technicians of the bombs team who responded to a complex of santa Monica town houses where a resident said they had found X-Rayons Grenades explosives and told city police that they thought that the devices were inert, according to a new search mandate in the investigation in the explosion that killed three Los Angeles County sheriff detectives last week.
The bomb team recovered two hand grenades left behind – apparently by a previous tenant – in an underground parking storage unit at Bay Street Complex Thursday evening and took them to the Biscailuz Center training academy. The next day, at least one of the grenades exploded while the technicians manipulated them in the parking lot.
The explosion has been the deadliest incident for the department for more than 150 years, killing veterans. Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn.
Investigators from the Homicides Office of the Sheriff department and the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives are still trying to determine exactly how detonation occurred and how the devices found themselves inside the storage unit. It is not known if officials still thought that grenades were inert when they were treated on Friday.
A search warrant, issued on Friday and examined by Times on Wednesday, authorized investigators to seek storage units inside the complex for incendiary devices, accelerators, surveillance images, explosives and other dangerous materials.

On Wednesday, the authorities were seen performing suitcases, garbage cans and storage cases with a hard shell while they were rummaging through a storage unit behind a building in the 4200 Bloc Blques Way block in Marina Del Rey.
The officials did not reveal what, if necessary, they discovered during their research on the ship or the storage units.
