India accused the United States of targeting a ‘unfair and irrational’ manner two days ago when US President Donald Trump announced to increase the taxes of New Delhi on the purchase of Russian oil.

The US President said on Monday that India was earning huge profits by purchasing Russian crude oil at concessional rates, ignoring the ongoing war in Ukraine.

He wrote on his personal social media platform ‘Truth Social’: ‘India is not only buying Russian oil on a large scale, but is also selling a large part of it on huge benefits in open markets around the world. They do not care how many people are killing the Russian war machine in Ukraine. This is why I will increase India’s taxes paid to the United States. ,

New Delhi replied that it would ‘take all necessary steps to ensure their national interests and economic security’.

Earlier, two Indians in the Government of India told Reuters that India would continue to buy Russian oil despite Trump’s hazards.

According to official data, India, which is the third largest oil importer and consumer in the world, meets 35 % of its gross crude oil needs with Russian oil.

Overall, India imported an average of 48 million 80 thousand barrels of oil per day in the financial year by March 2025, which was five percent higher than the previous year. Russian oil imports increased by 7.3 %to 17 million 60 thousand barrels per day, which led to its stake to 36 %, while OPEC countries increased to 48.5 %.

In March 2025, India’s fourth largest oil supply country was also after the United States Russia, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
