Tropical Storm Iona is formed in the central Pacific, no threat to Hawaii

Miami – The Iona tropical storm formed in the central Pacific and should continue to make trekking west on hot open waters and well south of Hawaii.

The Miami National Hurricane National Center said Iona had emerged from a tropical depression at around 960 miles (1,545 kilometers) on Sunday in the southeast of Honolulu. The storm is expected to strengthen more in the coming days but currently represents no threat to Hawaii. No coastal watches or warnings are in force.

The system has acquired tropical storm status with sustained maximum winds of around 40 MPH (64 km / h). He was in a direction generally west at around 10 MPH (16 km / h).

Iona is the first name named in the hurricanes season in the central Pacific.
