The Philadelphia Phillies would have participated in the race for the Slugger of the Eugenio Suárez stars.

According to Scott Lauber du Philadelphie InquirerPhillies have had conversations with Arizona on Suárez diamonds. Unlike most of the teams that pursue him, the situation in Philadelphia is more complex.

“It would not be the cleanest cup,” wrote Lauber. “Suárez is a third basic player, and although Alec Bohm was released with a fractured coast, the Phillies expect what it comes back next month. Suárez’s trade, then, would finally need an unwanted counter-movement, as Kyle Schwarber put it in the left field.”

Defensively, Suárez is at best the average of the league, but its offensive production certainly compensates. The Diamondbacks would not have stayed in the playoff race as long as they did without its performance.

However, it should not be out of the image to keep Schwarber as a designated striker. If Suárez is the best third goal player, he should keep his place on Bohm.

“The phillies should decide whether the offensive bump of the addition of Suárez, tied with Schwarber for second place in the national league with 36 circuits, would prevail over the weakening of external defense,” added Lauber. “Suárez, eligible for the free agency after the season, could also provide right -hand protection in Bryce Harper in the middle of the order.”

The answer to this should be yes. Philadelphia should absolutely sacrifice the defense to acquire Suárez, whether by moving Schwarber on the left or playing Suárez in the third in Bohm.

It remains to be seen if they really do. Suárez would need a high return in Arizona, and a third basic player is not on the list of main priorities for phillies.
