The British singer Cleo Laine, one of the most distinctive voices in jazz, died on Friday July 25, 2025, at the age of 97. In this report “Sunday Morning” of September 30, 1990, the correspondent Billy Taylor spoke with Laine and her husband, the musician John Dankworth, their dynamism for musical diversity, jazz and Broadway opera. Taylor also reports the support of the Jazz FM couple, a British radio station just launched to jazz, and the wool music school and Dankworth founded, during which they give a precious lesson to the aspirants and singers: “Never copy anyone.”
