An unusual meteorological model for July brings a chance of dry lightning and dispersed showers in certain parts of southern California this weekend, which increased the risk of starting fire, sudden flood and flow of debris, said the National Weather Service.

Sirard said that the conditions leading to rare thunderstorms are not the typical summer monsoon motif in which humidity flows from the southwest desert in southern California. This is rather powered by a low pressure system from northern Mexico pulling air to the south, creating similar results.
“At any time during the summer when we get humidity in the middle of the atmosphere and a mechanism to help destabilize the atmosphere … [there’s a] Slight chances of showers and thunderstorms, ”said Sirard.
