Washington – President Trump will soon sign a decree, which allows cities and states to more easily withdraw the homeless streets And get them a treatment elsewhere, said the White House on Thursday.
The President’s ordinance asks the Attorney General Pam Bondi to “reverse the previous judicials and finish consent decrees which limit the capacity of states and local governments to commit individuals in the streets which are a risk for themselves or for others”. He also initiates federal funding to move people to the streets who “cause public disorders and who suffer from a serious mental illness or dependence” to “treatment centers, assisted ambulatory treatments or other facilities”. It is not yet clear how much funding it will be, or where it will come from.
The executive decree that the president should sign also asks Bondi to work with the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Ministry of Transport to prioritize federal subsidies for states and cities which “respect the prohibitions on the use of open illicit drugs, urban campsite and rent”. The planned order has been reported for the first time by USA today.
“President Trump issues his commitment to make America again safe and put an end to roaming across America,” said the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement. “By removing the vagrant criminals from our streets and redirecting resources to drug addiction programs, the Trump administration will guarantee that Americans feel safe in their own communities and that individuals suffering from dependence or mental health struggle are able to obtain the help they need.”
In March, Mr. Trump called to Washington, DC, the mayor Muriel Bowser to “clean all the unsightly homeless camps in the city, including specifically those outside the state department and near the White House”. He added that if she was “not able to do it, we will be forced to do it for her!” He signed an executive decree ordering the National Park Service to clean all the homeless camps on federal lands.
He also signed a separate executive decree In March, aimed at dismantling the United States Interinisitutions Council on homelessness.
The president has committed to withdraw the homeless from the country during his campaign.
“When I return to the White House, we will use all the tools, the lever and the authority to remove the homeless from our streets,” Trump said in a campaign video in spring 2023.
