Venus Williams developed a brilliant display on his singles returns on Tuesday so that the World No. 35 Patten Staren was outright at the Modabala City DC Open.
Beating his fellow American 6-3 6-4, 45-year-old Williams won his first singles in two years, and later, 47-year-old Martina Noreva became the oldest WTA match winning, winning her first round match in Wimbledon in 2004.
Williams returned to court with a doubles victory with the helicopter on Monday and took the confidence in his singles action.
The seven -time Grand Slam champion went down in Washington at both sets of stares at an early interval, but generally fought to win with danged defense and aggressive services.
Williams will be contested by Poland’s fifth seed Magdaleina Fruich.
“I think I just attacked the whole time. It’s just trying to get very hard and not enough,” Williams said, playing the first singles game of the year, after the opening round win.
“This is the same because I do this, but at the same time, it was necessary for me to do it. Now I don’t have to do it, but I have the same fire and I want to win.
“In some ways, I’m still coming back to it. When you do every day, everything is natural. There is no such natural feeling anymore, but I hope I can return to it.”
Williams has not confirmed its presence in the rest of North America’s hard court swing, but will possibly save wild cards in the WTA 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati.
Williams said, “I think it was a huge win for me today. As I said, it is not easy. It will not be easy. It is not easy for anyone here.”
“So I know I have to fight for every match, but I’m ready for it.”
